ORANGE COUNTY RECYCLING BROCHURE & APP

This project focused on promoting sustainable habits through a paired app and brochure that educate users about proper recycling practices. Designed with clarity and engagement in mind, the materials simplify complex recycling rules with bold icons, clear layouts, and approachable language. The app offers interactive sorting tools and reminders, while the brochure serves as a quick offline reference. Together, they create a cohesive system aimed at making recycling more accessible, intuitive, and part of everyday life.

Research & Discovery
I researched sustainability and environmental communication, focusing on how typography can advocate for change. I found that recycling guidelines vary widely by location and that effective visuals play a key role in motivating behavior. I realized the importance of targeting young adults with bright, eye-catching visuals and clear messaging. The project taught me how to use design to engage audiences and encourage sustainable habits.

Ideation & Sketching
I sketched across mediums to create a bold, playful visual tone that would engage young adults and clearly communicate recycling information. I focused on using type, layout, and color to express movement and urgency without relying on imagery. I learned how to structure a 4-fold brochure by carefully planning the layout and hierarchy of information. I also explored how interactivity and flow could enhance the app experience, ensuring both formats worked together to engage users effectively.

REFINEMENT & ITERATION
I refined the layout, color, and typography to create a strong visual rhythm and ensure the design felt cohesive across both print and digital components. Each element was adjusted to better align with the needs and expectations of young adult users. I learned how to balance bold, energetic visuals with clear communication, making the design both functional and eye-catching. This stage helped me understand how subtle shifts in hierarchy, spacing, and contrast can significantly improve user engagement.

Finalization & Delivery
The final product included a location-specific recycling app and a companion brochure designed to inform and direct users to the app. The brochure served as an engaging entry point, while the app provided personalized guidelines and interactive tools. I learned how to create a unified system across mediums that not only informs but also drives action. This project showed me how typography, when paired thoughtfully with color and layout, can be a powerful tool for education and behavioral change.
